Better yet, come with an idea of which models you want to test drive before making your decision, and make a mental note of the optional features that are most important to you.

But buying a car from a dealership requires more than just knowing which one you want. Because it’s such a big and important purchase, it involves a fair amount of paperwork to make the sale happen. Save yourself a trip back home to rummage through your filing cabinet by coming prepared with the following:

• Your driver’s license: We can’t let you purchase and drive away in a new vehicle without the legal ability to drive.
• Your insurance card: Similarly, we need to know that the vehicle will be insured the second you drive it off the lot.
• Information on your trade-in: Trading in your current vehicle? We’re happy to help. Just be sure to bring the title and registration. If possible, also bring documentation of its service history, any repairs, and any improvements you made to it.
• Most recent pay stubs: Bring the last two pay stubs from your job. If you work more than one job, bring pay stubs from both so we can get a fuller picture of your financial situation. If you have other sources of income (rental properties, investments, etc.), feel free to bring those too.
• Proof of residency: To prove your address, bring in a current utility bill.
• References: To help your loan application process, a list of references outside your household is very helpful.
